Understanding UV
UV (ultraviolet) and UVC (ultraviolet-C) are both types of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths shorter than visible light. However, their wavelength range, effects on human health, and practical applications differ.
UV radiation has a wavelength between 100 and 400 nanometers (nm) and is divided into three categories based on its wavelength: UV-A (400-315 nm), UV-B (315-280 nm), and UV-C (280-100 nm). UV-A and UV-B are the types of UV radiation that reach the Earth's surface, and they can have harmful effects on human health, including skin damage, eye damage, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
On the other hand, UV-C radiation has a shorter wavelength than UV-A and UV-B, ranging from 100 to 280 nm. It is typically filtered out by the Earth's atmosphere and does not reach the surface. UV-C radiation is germicidal, meaning it can kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms by damaging their DNA. It is commonly used for disinfection in hospitals, laboratories, and settings where sterilisation is necessary.
In summary, UV and UVC are forms of ultraviolet radiation with different wavelength ranges and practical applications. UV-A and UV-B harm human health, while UV-C is germicidal and used for disinfection.
